Location & Transport

Getting to Luminate

Luminate Festival is approximately four hours drive from the ferry in Picton, via Nelson.

Nelson is the closest city, less than two hour’s drive to the festival site. There is an airport in Nelson and a small airport in Takaka.

Motueka and Takaka are on either side of the Takaka Hill, each less than one hour’s drive to the festival, via SH60.

Canaan Downs is on top of the Takaka Hill. At the hill summit, turn off from
SH60 onto Canaan Road and follow for 8km to the festival site.

Note: Canaan Road is a gravel road, very narrow and winding. Caution and low speeds are required at all times.

Other Transport

Buses run between Nelson, Motueka and Takaka. They do not bring you to the festival site, but buses do go past Canaan Road on Takaka Hill. Contact Golden Bay Coachlines or Heaphy-Nelson Coachlines.

Consider joining the Luminate carpooling page (on Facebook) or other carpooling sites where you can offer rides or ask to share transport to and from the festival.

Avoid trying to hitch a ride from Canaan Road as it is not easy for cars to stop, and walking the 8km gravel road is not recommended.

The Woolshed Cafe is on the corner of Canaan Road. Drive past very slowly to reduce dust. Buy a drink or snack if you need to use the amenities. Respect the cafe environment and visitors and do not block the gate.
