Luminate Festival

Waste Minimisation

 

Luminate aims to go further than the three R’s, encouraging participants into a new era of ownership, creating less “waste” at source. All participants, suppliers and crew are empowered with inspiring initiatives that are educational and informative. Pioneering closed loop systems and guidelines support these initiatives that reach far out from the event site.


No rubbish bins or recycling on site

·        pack out what you bring in and leave no trace

·        bring products with minimal or no packaging

·        a focus on reducing waste at source on all levels

·        everyone is responsible to deal with any waste they generate

·        directions are given to local recycling and refuse centres

·        clean environment bond for food vendors

·        micro rubbish collected daily and post event by the eco amenities team


Bring Your Own Containers

·        vendors are not allowed to provide food or drinks in disposable plates or cups

·        bring your own containers & cutlery, or hire ceramics from Luminate

·        dishwashing facilities are provided for your convenience

·        vendors are not allowed to sell products in cans, bottles or packaging

·        bring your own water bottle and fill it for free from Canaan’s pure spring water


Composting and closing loops

·        all toilets are compost toilets (see here for more info)

·        all food scraps from the market are composted

·        all food scraps from food vendors are collected and composted

·        participants are encouraged to compost personal food scraps in the central compost

·        all organic matter is added into the humanure pile to form a thermophilic system

·        compost is used to fertilise the land on site


Reusing Resources

·        infrastructure, art and décor are all created using re-cycled materials and by re-using and up-cycling resources

·        natural building materials are used where possible, eg bamboo, untreated timber

·        natural materials are used for décor and art where possible, eg harakeke, bamboo

·        90 per cent of all timber used for building is recycled or donated

·        everything from the furniture and appliances to the nuts and bolts are meticulously reused year on year

Sacred Relationships - Inki Tāne

ARTS & CULTURE WORKSHOPS

This workshop will present the perspective held by many indigenous tribes worldwide: we, as humans, are not above the natural world but rather an intricate part thereof. An examination of our sacred relationship with varying plant and animal species through both physical as well as metaphysical lenses will be offered.

Zumba® - Ngaire Piggott

MOVE WORKSHOPS

Ngaire presents a super fun, funky Zumba®/dance workout that is suitable for anyone. Zumba is fantastic because it uses a variety of different dance rhythms like African, tango, salsa, reggaeton, hip hop, belly dance.... you name it. With choreography simple enough for anyone to be able to participate, experience the pure joy from such a fun unified dance session. It’s really awesome!

Yoga 2.0 - Dr. Sam Shay, DC

HEALTH WORKSHOPS

Certain ancient postures and principals of yoga are unsafe. Revealed are the darker sides of yoga: how people can get hurt physically, emotionally, nutritionally, and spiritually by the misapplication of yogic principles and postures. Dr Sam aims to educate and alleviate through sharing his personal experience.

Wifi, Cellphones and RFEMR - Sue Grey LLB(Hons), BSc, RSHDipPHI

Guided Partner Massage and Meditation - Claire Thompson

HOLISTIC WORKSHOPS

Take the time to ground and connect at the festival. Participants pair up and are led through a simple and effective massage sequence (done through the clothes), while being guided to notice the mindfulness, gratitude, and interconnectedness that naturally arise while trading massages. Bring a friend to trade massages with, or find a friend at the workshop!

FreeDance: Connect - Nik Chung

MOVE WORKSHOPS

Be guided to explore sensations, thoughts, emotions and spirit with verbal cues through 90mins of tantalising music. FreeDance: Connect is an ecstatic dance experience with carefully chosen music that invites you to connect with yourself, the environment and others to create a joyful collective consciousness, celebrating our synergy as one.

World Class Music

Luminate's Live Stage offers an authentic, world class line-up of talented musicians, spanning many contemporary and traditional genres and artists who merge live music with digital/computer technology to forge new and exciting, integrated pathways of musical creativity and performance.

TheElectronic Zone line-up at Luminate 2015 is packed full of amazing international and local talent, pushing the boundaries of contemporary electronic genres, and providing a world class experience of diverse, cutting edge dance music. it's the only dedicated zone for 100% electronic music at Luminate.

Tribal hosts acoustic drumming & other native instruments in a wonderland of organic sculpture and much barefoot dancing around the fire. Bring your percussion, your fire toys, your inspiration and join in this sharing space.

The Chillout Lounge offers a comfortable place to chill out, lounge around, and enjoy a mug of chai or a bliss ball, whilst soothing atmospheric soundscapes permeate your cells and encourage a heightened state of quantum relaxation.

The Village Stage's pitch will have a powered stage with a couple of mics and speakers and be located in the food zone.

Inspirational Workshops

Luminate Festival offers a  wide selection of workshops like Permaculture, Bio Dynamics, Yoga, Aikido, Jikyo Jutsu, Qi Gong, Holistic health, Reflexology, Shiatsu, Native plant medicine, Harakeke, Maori Legends, African dance, to Belly dancing and lots more. At night a selection of enlightening movies & documentaries are screened.

Music workshops include Celtic guitar, Irish low whistle, Irish bouzouki, African drumming, Didgeridoo, songs of medieval Spain, Indian Vocalisation, Kirtan, Stagecraft, Improvisation, and Electronic music production using Abelton Live and Logic.

The dedicated Juggle-poi-toy circus zone hosts sessions on juggling, poi, staff, slackline, unicycling, stilts, whip cracking, silks/aerial, acrobalance, hulahoop, and lots more; most are suitable for kids and adults. At night the zone transforms into spectacular choreographed fire performances, and look out for the many roving performers too.

Amazing Range of Activities

The Market is a colorful, spacious area; the central happening ‘home’ of the festival, offering quality, yummy healthy food, a range of wonderful products, and a open mic stage! It’s a great place to catch up with friends over a mouth-watering meal, coffee, juice or snack, and for parents to relax while the children enjoy a variety of activities.

The "Healing Hub – Hauora", offers a wide range of healing experiences from various styles of massage and other bodywork to channeled readings and light workers.

At the Circus Space you will find an extensive program of circus style workshops catering for all ages and abilities, and hosts a spectacular array of fire/LED performers each night throughout the festival.

When we say that the Luminate Festival is Kidz friendly, we mean much more than just 'allowing' Kids to be there with their parents... We actually try to make the event a memorable experience for all the children who come and to support their parents to enjoy being there with them.
